The Wall: A Living Collage
Redstone Pop-up Artist Studios, Summer 2012
In this project I explored the concept of art making as a conversation. Instead of two people talking, the subjects might be things like artist and materials, artist and collaborator, ink and crayon, paint and cardboard, order and chaos, destruction and creation. Over the course of six weeks I worked directly on the wall of my studio space, creating a giant chaotic collage in constant flux. Every layer was created in response to what had happened in previous layers, and anyone who walked through the open studios was invited to participate by adding to the wall, thus joining the conversation.

This is a finished painting that resulted from tearing things off the wall and pasting them onto a canvas. I highlighted and preserved interesting things that happened when I was working more chaotically by outlining them in oil pastel and then painting around them in contrasting colors. This technique of creating windows to different layers of a painting continues to be important in my work.
